World Cup transport fares in New Jersey slashed after fan outcry in 2026

Train and bus prices to MetLife Stadium have been reduced after fans protested expensive transport costs for the 2026 World Cup.

Ticket price reductions announced Following strong complaints from supporters, transport costs to World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey have been significantly lowered. Train tickets dropped from $150 (£111) to $98 (£73), while shuttle bus fares fell from $80 (£59) to $20 (£15). England fan group leader Thomas Concannon had previously labeled the original prices as 'astronomical' and 'completely out of the norm'. Normally, a return train journey from Penn Station in Manhattan to the venue costs $12.90 (£9.50). ## Government leaders criticize FIFA decisions New Jersey governor Mikie Sherril had earlier argued against FIFA’s choice not to subsidize transport costs, stating local taxpayers should not cover the expense. Transport during the 2019 World Cup in Russia and 2022 in Qatar was free, and the USA had agreed to the same benefit in its 2018 hosting deal. A 2023 agreement adjustment allowed supporters to pay only the actual travel costs instead. FIFA responded by noting no major event at MetLife Stadium had ever seen such price increases before. ## State officials confirm price cuts In a social media update on Tuesday, Sherril announced the reduced train ticket prices, crediting commercial sponsors for making the change possible without using state funds. 'Good news: Ahead of NJ Transit World Cup train tickets going on sale, NJ Transit is lowering ticket prices to $98 without New Jersey taxpayer money,' Sherril wrote. 'Thank you to our partners for helping make this possible.' New York governor Kathy Hochul also emphasized accessibility, sharing the news of a 75% reduction in round-trip bus fares via social media. ## Additional transport measures revealed Hochul added that 20% of tickets would be set aside for New York residents to honor their role in hosting the global event. In contrast, fans traveling to Foxborough, Boston face much higher costs, with round-trip tickets rising from $20 (£15) to $80 (£60), a jump of over 300%. Kansas City will offer return bus tickets for $15, while Philadelphia confirmed its standard rate of $2.90 will stay unchanged during the tournament. ## Affected teams and match schedule The price hikes in New Jersey and Foxborough will impact England and Scotland supporters. England plays Ghana in Foxborough on June 23, then Panama at MetLife Stadium on June 27. Scotland, managed by Steve Clarke, has two games in Foxborough against Haiti on June 13 and Morocco on June 19.
