World Cup rookies to feature unique collectable debut patches in 2026

Players making their first World Cup appearance in summer 2026 will wear special debut patches on their shirts.

New trading cards program Athletes earning their maiden World Cup caps this summer will sport a distinctive debut patch sewn onto their jerseys. Stars like Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal will join squad members from Scotland and other nations in debuting at the tournament. The patches will later be detached after each player’s first match and transformed into limited-edition Topps collectable trading cards. While the exact design of these World Cup patches remains undecided, their introduction aligns with a fresh licensing agreement between Fifa and Fanatics, who will replace Panini as the governing body’s partner for trading cards and stickers starting in 2031. ## Patch removal and card conversion Each team will receive a supply of debut patches that are applied to a player’s upper-right chest using adhesive before their tournament bow. Once the game concludes, the patch is peeled off and affixed to a unique trading card. The completed card is then forwarded to Topps for random placement into a Chrome MLS hobby box, priced around $120 or £88. Every hobby box contains 21 packs, each holding four cards, with two autographed cards per box in the MLS model, though it remains uncertain whether World Cup cards will bear signatures. ## Debut patch history in sports The concept of debut patches has been utilized in American sports for multiple years and was officially introduced to Major League Soccer in 2024. Fifa has yet to outline the full operational details for the 2026 World Cup, but the process is expected to mirror the MLS workflow, which operates under a Fanatics licensing deal. The debut patches will not become commercially available until after 2031, meaning collectors can only obtain them after the Fanatics agreement takes effect. ## Expected debut card volume This summer’s World Cup is projected to generate over 600 unique debut cards, as debutants from 2026 and 2030 contribute to a growing collection of World Cup memorabilia. Countries such as Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will each make their first-ever World Cup appearances. Austria, the Czech Republic, DR Congo, Haiti, Iraq, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Scotland, and Turkey are returning after lengthy absences from the tournament. ## Notable returning nations Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ivory Coast are all making their first return to the World Cup in twelve years and will feature nearly entirely debutant squads. These returning teams add to the diversity of first-time participants and highlight the historic nature of the 2026 competition. The patches and resulting cards aim to capture these milestone moments for fans and collectors alike.
