Westwood pleased Warwickshire remain in County Championship hunt 2026
Warwickshire sit fourth in Division One after seven matches, just five points behind Essex with half the season gone.
Warwickshire's position in table Warwickshire head coach Ian Westwood expressed satisfaction at his team's standing in the County Championship race at the midway point of the 2026 season. The Bears currently occupy the fourth spot in Division One, trailing the current leaders Essex by a mere five points after seven completed matches. Their campaign so far includes two victories, four draws, and a single loss. A tight group of teams has made the competition fiercely contested, with Nottinghamshire in fifth place just nine points behind Essex and Glamorgan in eighth still within striking distance. ## Westwood's assessment of the league Westwood emphasized the intense nature of the league during an interview, stating, 'It's really tight and I've said all along that it's a really, really tough league.' He highlighted the unpredictability of matches, noting that strong performances on any given day could prove decisive. Westwood cautioned against assuming any result is guaranteed, stressing the need to maintain focus and momentum throughout the campaign. His comments underscore the competitive environment across the division. ## Yorkshire match draw praised Warwickshire rescued a hard-fought draw against Yorkshire in their most recent red-ball fixture at Scarborough, a match Westwood described as a testament to his side's resilience. Chasing an unlikely 453 on the final day, the Bears slumped to 93 for four early in their innings. However, half-centuries from Sam Hain (69), captain Ed Barnard (58), Beau Webster (49), and debutant Manav Suthar (37) guided them to safety with two wickets remaining. Westwood praised the team's character and skill in challenging conditions, saying, 'I think lots of teams there would have fallen away, the conditions were tricky [we] had to show a lot of skill, the ball turning out the rough on a pitch that was wearing and going a bit up and down.' ## Inconsistency acknowledged by coach Westwood admitted to struggling to pinpoint the reasons behind his team's inconsistent displays across the four-day encounter. Despite the victory, he noted that performance fluctuations had been a recurring theme throughout the match. Westwood labeled it as 'one of those things,' suggesting that such variations are part and parcel of competitive cricket. His remarks reflect an understanding of the challenges in maintaining high standards consistently. ## Woakes ruled out for Somerset clash Warwickshire are set to face Somerset at Taunton starting Friday, and a return for former England all-rounder Chris Woakes appears unlikely. Though Woakes has featured in all six T20 Blast games this season, he has not played in the County Championship since late April due to ongoing soreness. Westwood commented on Woakes' condition, saying, 'I don't think we'll be seeing Woakesy [for Somerset]. He's been sore for quite a while. He's had a jab this week to try and help him out, so we'll see how he goes, but he wouldn't have had much bowling apart from the four overs here and there in T20.' ## Squad options discussed Westwood also mentioned the unfortunate absence of Jordan Thompson, who missed selection against Yorkshire. He highlighted the depth in the bowling department, noting Nathan Gilchrist's strong performances in the second team. Westwood added, 'Tommo's [Jordan Thompson] really unlucky to miss out [against Yorkshire], we've got Nathan Gilchrist bowling well in the second team, so we've got options.'
