Walsall appoint ex-Huddersfield manager Lee Grant as new head coach in 2026

Walsall have named former Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

Grant signs three-year deal The League Two club has finalized an agreement with Lee Grant, who will take charge at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium. The 43-year-old has committed to a three-year contract starting immediately. He steps into the role following the departure of former interim manager Darren Byfield, who stepped in after Mat Sadler was dismissed in March. Walsall ended the campaign in 13th place, twelve points adrift of the promotion playoffs despite leading the division at Christmas. ## Byfield's interim spell ends Darren Byfield had been handed the temporary reins until the season concluded following Mat Sadler’s exit in March. The former striker took charge during a transitional period under challenging circumstances. His interim period now concludes as Grant prepares to take over full-time duties for the new campaign. Walsall finished the campaign 13 points short of the playoffs after topping the table in December. ## Grant reflects on new opportunity Speaking after his appointment, Grant expressed his excitement and pride at joining Walsall. 'I'm super delighted and proud to be the new head coach,' he stated. He highlighted his belief in attacking football and player development as key strengths he plans to bring to the club. Grant emphasized his eagerness to begin work immediately and help the club move forward in the coming months. 'It's going to be a busy period for myself and the club but I'm really excited to get going,' he added. ## Grant's managerial background Grant previously spent three years as part of the coaching team at Ipswich Town before taking his first senior managerial role. He was appointed Huddersfield Town manager in May 2025, securing his first top-flight coaching position. However, his tenure lasted only eight months despite the team sitting sixth in League One at the time of his departure. His exit came in January 2026 after an eight-month spell in charge.
