Tottenham defender Danso vows racist abuse won't define him in 2026

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso spoke out against racist abuse on social media after the club's 2-2 draw with Brighton on April 18.

Spurs condemn vile racism Tottenham Hotspur issued a strong condemnation of the 'horrifying, dehumanizing racism' directed at Austria international Kevin Danso following their Premier League match against Brighton on April 18. The club took immediate action by reporting the abuse to law enforcement authorities. This incident occurred during the Premier League's No Room For Racism campaign, which aims to promote inclusion and combat discrimination in football. A spokesperson for the league emphasized that discriminatory behavior has 'no place in football or society' and promised to work with clubs, governing bodies, and social media platforms to address the issue. ## Danso refuses to let abuse control him Tottenham defender Kevin Danso declared that he refuses to allow racist abuse to shape his identity or career. The 27-year-old defender told a news outlet that he had previously experienced racism while playing in Germany but chose not to speak about it at the time. 'The last time I did experience it, I was very young and I didn't tell anybody about it,' Danso explained. 'I feel like this time it was important to speak up, address it, and make sure people know I've seen it. It's not going to change how I play, and it's completely unnecessary—you're just wasting your energy.' ## Racism in football reaches alarming levels In a separate report from December 2025, racism, rape, and death threats were highlighted as part of a weekend of social media abuse faced by footballers. Racist abuse has continued to plague the sport despite ongoing campaigns. The Premier League reiterated its stance that anyone who engages in such behavior 'is not welcome in our game' and 'not a true fan.' The league vowed to collaborate with clubs, authorities, and online platforms to make tackling discrimination a top priority. ## Danso shares personal struggles with racism Kevin Danso discussed his long-standing experiences with racism, having grown up in Austria where he faced frequent discrimination in a predominantly white environment. Despite this, he has developed ways to cope with the abuse. 'I just try not to let it affect me or how I feel about myself or my performance so I can keep playing at a high level,' he said. 'It doesn't define me, and it doesn't belong in football.' ## Recent cases of racism spark police action In May, Merseyside Police arrested an Everton supporter during a match against Manchester City for allegedly directing racist abuse at Antoine Semenyo. This followed the arrest and charging of a 47-year-old man earlier in the season after Semenyo faced similar abuse while playing for Bournemouth. In February, four players became targets of racist abuse over a single weekend, prompting investigations by the UK Football Policing Unit. The players included Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida, Burnley's Hannibal Mejbri, Chelsea's Wesley Fofana, and Wolves' Tolu Arokodare.
