Tamim Iqbal named Bangladesh Cricket Board president in 2026 elections
Bangladesh Cricket Board elected Tamim Iqbal as president following a day-long election process including physical and e-ballots.
Government orders BCB elections In April, the Bangladesh government instructed the interim body to conduct elections for the Bangladesh Cricket Board after dissolving the previously elected committee led by Aminul Islam. The administration set the stage for a full renewal of the board's leadership through a transparent voting procedure. Following the dissolution, preparations began for a fresh election to restore governance in the cricket administration. The government's decision came after evaluating the need for structural changes in the board's operations. ## Election process and results A one-day voting session, which included both in-person ballots and electronic voting, took place at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the official headquarters of the board. From the elections, twenty-three directors were selected across three distinct categories, with two additional government representatives later named to complete the twenty-five-member leadership team. The successful candidates were announced after a comprehensive tallying of votes from all eligible participants. The election followed strict procedural guidelines to ensure fairness and accuracy in the results. ## Tamim Iqbal's cricketing legacy Tamim Iqbal stands among Bangladesh's most celebrated cricketers, having featured in 391 international matches across Test, ODI, and T20 formats throughout his career. During his tenure as captain, he guided the team to twenty-one victories in thirty-eight matches, including a notable 2-1 ODI series triumph over South Africa in 2022. Tamim stepped away from international cricket in early 2025, transitioning to domestic competitions. His playing career abruptly concluded after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match later that year, ending his aspirations on the field prematurely. ## Voting breakdown and director categories According to the election commission, eighty-eight votes were cast to select twenty-three directors across two of the three categories. The first category encompassed all divisions and districts nationwide, while the second category included Dhaka-based clubs participating in the league structure. The third category comprised former cricketers, team captains, education boards, and other affiliated figures. Tamim Iqbal secured one of twelve director positions in the second category, marking his entry into the new board. ## New board elects leadership The newly formed twenty-five-member committee conducted an internal election to appoint its president and two vice-presidents. Tamim Iqbal was chosen as the board president, while Fahim Sinha claimed one of the two vice-president positions. The appointment of the second vice-president remained pending after the conclusion of the election process. The leadership election reflected the collective decision of the newly elected directors. ## Previous election controversy The last board elections were held on October 6 of the previous year, during which Aminul Islam was re-elected as president under contentious circumstances. Tamim Iqbal, who led one of the competing panels, withdrew from the polls, citing allegations of bias and misconduct against Aminul Islam. The withdrawal highlighted internal disagreements over the fairness of the election process. Aminul Islam's re-election followed a period of significant debate within cricketing circles. ## Elected directors list by category The following directors were elected under Category 1: Sayeed Bin Zaman, Abdullah Al Fuad, Minhajul Abedin, Moyeen Uddin Chowdhury, Shantanu Islam, Shafiqul Alam, Mizanur Rahman, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, Shakrul Alam, Faisal Amin. Category 2 directors included: Tamim Iqbal, Fahim Sinha, Asif Rabbani, Israfil Khasru, Dr Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed, Masuduzzaman, Rafiqul Islam, Sakeef Ahmed, Shanian Taneem, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Yasir Abbas, Yasir Faisal.
