Alfred Johansson has been appointed as the new manager of Motherwell, replacing Jens Berthel Askou who joined Toulouse.
Alfred Johansson has been appointed as Motherwell’s new manager, taking charge in 2026 after Jens Berthel Askou’s departure.
The Swedish coach inherits a team that delivered strong performances last season and brings experience from his previous role at Rosenborg, where he was dismissed in May.
The club confirmed it used the same analytical methods that led to the appointments of Askou and Michael Wimmer, ensuring a consistent approach to recruitment and strategy.
Motherwell’s chairman, Kyrk Macmillan, highlighted the club’s data-driven selection process, which aims to align with their playing style and attract the right talent.
He praised Johansson’s ambition and determination, stating these qualities make him the ideal leader to build on last season’s success.
Macmillan noted that while analytics play a key role, the club also prioritizes bringing in the right people to fit their culture and values.
Johansson’s coaching career began in Sweden without a professional playing background.
He managed youth teams at Djurgården and FC Copenhagen, rising to the Under-19 level before his first head coaching role at Rosenborg in December 2023.
During his tenure there, he won 71 of 131 matches, showcasing his tactical approach and leadership skills.
The new manager expressed his enthusiasm for Motherwell’s direction and the quality of the current squad.
Johansson emphasized his desire to carry forward last season’s achievements, calling the team’s potential exciting.
He confirmed that preparations would begin immediately, with a focus on maintaining and building upon recent success.
Motherwell’s next challenge comes in the Europa Conference League qualifier against Faroese side Havnar Boltfelag on July 23.
Their Scottish Premiership season opener follows on August 2 with an away trip to Hibernian.
