Sussex head coach Farbrace admits off-field pressure is mounting in 2026
Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace says the next ten days will be extremely challenging as financial issues mount.
Coach feels burden of decisions Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace has admitted that ongoing off-field problems at the club are starting to weigh heavily on him. He described the coming ten days as 'really tough' for everyone involved at the Sussex setup. Farbrace revealed in April that he would step down at the end of the season, which has added to the pressure as financial difficulties continue. The club reported losses of £1.3 million in 2025, creating a difficult environment for all. ## Financial penalties hit squad stability Sussex were handed a twelve-point deduction in the County Championship for 'sustained operating losses' and lost one point in both the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup competitions. The ECB introduced stricter financial controls, including a salary cap that will remain until 2028, making it harder for the club to keep hold of key players. As of 1 June, rival teams can now approach out-of-contract Sussex players at the end of the season, signaling potential departures. ## Key players facing contract uncertainty Several Sussex players have deals ending this summer, including fast bowler Henry Crocombe, wicketkeeper John Simpson, and batter Tom Clark. Bowling all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Danny Lamb, and Charlie Tear are also set to become free agents. Farbrace shared his concerns about the upcoming talks with these players, stating he does not look forward to these discussions. He emphasized the responsibility he feels to make the right choices for the club's future. ## Coach discusses upcoming tough talks Farbrace told that he is 'finding it hard' to cope with the off-field issues and admitted the weight of responsibility is becoming too much to handle. In an interview following Sussex's T20 defeat at Hampshire on Tuesday, he said, 'It's definitely starting to get to me because I feel a huge weight of responsibility to try and make the right decisions to give us a chance of having some sort of a squad next year.' He mentioned ongoing discussions with some players and more planned in the coming days. ## Mass exodus expected at season’s end Farbrace warned that a significant number of players will leave the club come the end of the season, though he stressed it is not their fault or decision. He acknowledged that for some players, this will be heartbreaking, describing it as a 'pivotal week for the club.' Despite the uncertainty, he praised the squad's professionalism, saying, 'The lads have been brilliant up to now. They’ve not let the disappointment and the anger of what’s going on at the club get in the way.' ## Financial shortfall adds to pressure Sussex still face another potential £1 million shortfall this season and must reduce playing budget expenses through cuts. Any contract offers to players must receive ECB approval before being finalized. Farbrace admitted that keeping contract-related distractions out of the dressing room is part of his role, but he made it clear he is not looking forward to the next few weeks. He stated, 'I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m not looking forward to the next couple of weeks in terms of the off-field stuff.'
