Stokes warns England players may leave over strict IPL rules in 2026

England captain Ben Stokes cautions players could quit international cricket if England enforce tough IPL policies.

Archer's Test absence linked to IPL England fast bowler Jofra Archer did not play the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's after completing his IPL duties, raising doubts about his availability for the second Test at The Oval beginning June 17. Archer, who last featured in a Test in Adelaide during the 2025-26 Ashes, remains in Barbados and will not rejoin England until after the opening Test. His absence leaves England without their leading pace bowler as they aim to recover from a heavy 4-1 Ashes loss Down Under. Former England skippers Michael Atherton and Michael Vaughan have raised concerns over Archer's unavailability for the Lord's Test. ## Stokes addresses player workload concerns Captain Ben Stokes acknowledged the growing frustration around player availability but stressed that modern cricket offers opportunities that did not exist decades ago. 'In an ideal situation it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available at every single opportunity. That is not the way of cricket at the moment,' he said. Stokes warned that mismanaging the situation could lead to players walking away from England duty permanently. 'There is a situation where it could get messy and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it in a different way, and that is not good for anyone.' ## IPL rules complicate England selections Recent changes to the IPL's regulations now penalize players who withdraw for non-medical reasons with a potential two-year ban, complicating England's ability to secure key players. Archer earned around £1.2m for his 2025 IPL season with Rajasthan Royals, part of which included a central England contract during his injury absence. Sussex batter Jacob Bethell also spent time in India with Royal Challengers Bengaluru but returned early due to a finger injury sustained during the IPL. Bethell has not played a red-ball match since his century in the final Ashes Test in Sydney in January and will bat at number three at Lord's for the first time in a home Test. ## England's selection dilemmas grow England's squad faced further uncertainty after Wednesday's training at Lord's was disrupted by rain, keeping the pitch covered for much of the day. Gus Atkinson is tipped to start ahead of uncapped Sonny Baker, while spinner Shoaib Bashir could be omitted in favor of an all-pace attack if the match start is delayed by weather. Stokes acknowledged the evolving nature of player workloads, saying, 'It's just one of those things. You have your number three, he has a great couple of games out in Australia, then he spends nine or 10 weeks out in India and you are seeing him two days before a Test match. That is almost becoming the norm.' ## Stokes defends player choices Stokes emphasized that Archer's commitment to England remains unchanged despite missing the first Test. 'Jofra has shown that he's committed and loves playing for England. Just because he's not available for this first Test match does not change that,' he said. The captain also highlighted the broader challenges of modern cricket scheduling, noting, 'A lot of points people are making around Jof and that situation are to do with the landscape when they were playing. It's completely different now. There are opportunities for cricketers now that there were not 10, 15, 20 years ago.'
