Spin duo guides Derbyshire to first innings lead at Lord's in 2026
Derbyshire bowlers restricted Middlesex to 177 on day one before the hosts fought back to leave the visitors 106-4 at stumps.
Aitchison spins Derbyshire ahead Ben Aitchison’s second first-class five-wicket haul of the season came at Lord’s on day one, as his 5-47 exploited bowler-friendly conditions to put Derbyshire in charge. Rory Haydon contributed 2-60 from the other end, while Middlesex collapsed from 66-1 to 89-6 after lunch before limping to 177 all out. Ryan Higgins took 2-28 with the ball as Derbyshire finished on 106-4, still 71 runs behind at the close. ## Middlesex stutter in early session Middlesex were inserted under cloudy skies and began cautiously, with Sam Robson driving three early boundaries. Geddes, opening alongside Robson after strong showings last week, found Aitchison particularly troublesome. The opening stand reached 47 before Geddes fell to a wide long hop from Martin Andersson, top-edging a catch to cover. Max Holden played one aggressive pull shot but was undone when Aitchison’s delivery deviated just enough to clip the inside edge for lbw. ## Quick wickets after lunch tighten grip After lunch, Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy was trapped lbw in the first over of the session by Aitchison. Higgins then accounted for Higgins when he edged a sharp Haydon delivery to wicketkeeper Brooke Guest. Youngster Caleb Falconer followed soon after, playing all around a straight Aitchison delivery, leaving Middlesex at 89-6. A brief resistance from Zafar Gohar and Harry Duke was ended by loose shots caught behind the stumps. ## Derbyshire’s late blows and Aitchison’s landmark Eathan Bosch delayed Derbyshire’s collapse with powerful blows, including a straight six into the pavilion seats. Aitchison completed his first Lord’s five-wicket haul when Toby Roland-Jones was bowled off the inside edge. The visitors started their reply positively, with Luis Reece clipping Roland-Jones through midwicket for consecutive fours. ## Higgins strikes again as Middlesex fight back Higgins continued his fine spell by removing Harry Came, who nicked one through to Duke. A missed chance by Du Plooy allowed Matthew Montgomery to survive before Higgins claimed Bosch’s wicket with another edge. Montgomery then survived a big lbw shout from Sharma but was bowled shortly after by Roland-Jones. Higgins finished the day with a direct hit on Caleb Jewell’s stumps, leaving Aitchison and Nick Potts to see Derbyshire to the close.
