Southampton seek extra time over Middlesbrough spying allegations in 2026

Southampton have been accused of spying on Middlesbrough’s training session two days before their Championship play-off clash.

EFL accusation details The English Football League has formally charged Southampton with violating regulations by allegedly observing or attempting to observe a rival’s training session within 72 hours of a match. The league stated that the club did not act with the highest standards of integrity toward another team. The accusation centers on an incident at Middlesbrough’s Rockliffe Park training ground last Thursday, just two days before the Championship play-off semi-final first leg ended in a 0-0 draw at Riverside Stadium. ## Middlesbrough’s claim Middlesbrough reported that a member of Southampton’s coaching staff was discovered watching and recording their training session. The session took place two days before the first leg, which finished level at the home ground of Middlesbrough. Normally, Southampton would have 14 days to respond to the charges, but the league has requested an immediate hearing through the independent disciplinary commission. ## Southampton’s response Southampton have asked for additional time to complete an internal review while fully cooperating with the English Football League and the disciplinary commission. Southampton’s CEO Phil Parsons stated that the club is ensuring all facts and context are properly examined. He explained that due to the tight fixture schedule and minimal time between matches, they sought extra time to conduct a thorough and responsible review. Parsons also emphasized the need to establish the full context before any conclusions are made. ## Upcoming fixtures and context The two teams are set to face each other in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday evening. The victorious side will advance to the final at Wembley on May 23, where they will play Hull City. This is not the first instance of alleged spying within football, as previous cases involving other clubs have also been reported in recent years.
