Born on December 12, 1984, in Agartala, Rajesh Banik dedicated his life to cricket from an early age. He was recognized for his perseverance and long-term commitment to the sport, initially as an athlete and subsequently as a coach and selector. His life ended tragically in a road mishap on October 31, 2025, in Anandanagar, West Tripura, which shocked the Indian domestic cricket fraternity. Banik first gained attention as a teenager, representing India’s Under-15 team in 2000 alongside emerging talents such as Irfan Pathan and Ambati Rayudu. That year, he competed in the ACC Under-15 Trophy held in Kuala Lumpur and also toured England. His professional career in first-class cricket began with Tripura during the 2001–02 Ranji Trophy season. Throughout his playing days, he featured in 42 first-class matches, accumulating 1,469 runs at an average of 19.32, including six half-centuries and a top score of 93. His last first-class appearance took place in Cuttack against Odisha in November 2018.
