Surrey’s innings extended to 421 before Hampshire replied at 122-3, with play stalled by rain on day two.
Surrey piled up 421 runs in their first innings at The Kia Oval, with Ben Lawrence scoring 218 and Ollie Pope contributing 76. On the bowling front, James Abbott claimed three wickets for 76 runs, while Bjorn Potgieter finished with three scalps for 83. Hampshire were set a target of 422 after Surrey’s strong showing.
Rain interrupted play on the second day, allowing only 24.4 overs to be bowled in two separate spells. Hampshire managed to reach 122-3 in reply by stumps, trailing by 299 runs with seven wickets still in hand. Surrey had hoped to press their advantage but were thwarted by the damp conditions.
Hampshire resumed their innings at 17-0 but quickly lost Toby Albert for 16, bowled by Matt Fisher’s swinging delivery. Fisher continued his spell with a sharp inswinger that trapped Ali Orr lbw for 0, leaving Hampshire at 30-2. The visitors fought back, with Nick Gubbins and Jake Lehmann adding 58 runs for the third wicket.
Gubbins, batting at The Kia Oval, reached his eighth fifty in the ground, including three centuries. A missed chance at slip saw Rory Burns fail to dismiss Gubbins on 33, though the Hampshire batter soon fell for 51 to Jordan Clark. The partnership with Lehmann extended Hampshire’s innings before stumps, with the team finishing the day at 122-3.
Matt Fisher’s spell of 2-29 included the wickets of Albert and Orr, exploiting the movement under the floodlights. A sharp chance at slip was dropped off Gubbins, allowing him to continue his innings. Hampshire needed 150 more runs to avoid the follow-on but were 299 runs behind with seven wickets remaining at close of play.
Surrey will aim to secure their second Championship victory of the season as the forecast predicts drier conditions for the remaining two days. Hampshire, bottom of the table, face a battle to avoid the follow-on with 150 runs needed. Surrey’s bowlers will look to capitalise on the improved weather to finish the match.
