NBA commissioner issues warning after court invader disrupts Finals in San Antonio

A court invader disrupted Game 1 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio before receiving a lifetime ban from all league arenas.

Court disruption at NBA Finals During Game 1 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio on Wednesday, a spectator ran onto the court while recording himself on his phone as he approached Victor Wembanyama. The invader stopped directly in front of the San Antonio Spurs star without making contact with the 22-year-old French center before security personnel quickly removed him. He was later arrested for intentionally interfering with a lawful gathering and criminal trespass for entering the restricted court area despite clear warnings against such behavior. ## NBA issues lifetime bans An NBA spokesperson confirmed that the court invader and a second individual involved in the incident will face lifetime bans from all league venues. The league did not provide details about the role the second person played in the disruption. NBA commissioner Adam Silver emphasized that major sporting events offer a large stage for inappropriate actions, noting the serious consequences that follow such reckless behavior. ## Victor Wembanyama reacts to incident Victor Wembanyama, named the NBA’s defensive player of the year, admitted he had never experienced such a situation and confessed he did not know how to respond. 'I’ve never been in that situation, I didn’t know how to act,' Wembanyama said. He compared the shock of the moment to another unusual event when a bat flew across the court during a Spurs game in January 2024. The French international described the experience as surprising and unsettling. ## NBA commissioner comments on safety NBA commissioner Adam Silver questioned the motives of the intruder, stating he hesitated to even call the person a true fan. 'I even hesitate to describe that person as a fan. They seemed to have an ulterior motive for doing so,' Silver remarked. He acknowledged that such disruptions are an unfortunate aspect of sports globally and warned that the global spotlight on major events can tempt some individuals to act irresponsibly. Silver added that security measures will be heightened at Madison Square Garden ahead of upcoming NBA Finals games if US President Donald Trump attends, as he accepted an invitation from New York Knicks owner James Dolan to possibly attend both Game 3 on Monday and Game 4 on Wednesday. ## Pitch invasions rise ahead of World Cup The NBA court invasion comes less than a week before the start of the World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Pitch invasions have become more frequent in football, with incidents involving Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo often making headlines. One notable case occurred during an Inter Miami friendly in Puerto Rico in February, where multiple fans rushed the pitch, with one knocking down Argentina captain Messi. At least three additional invasions have taken place during Miami matches in the US and Canada this season. ## Concerns over pitch safety at Euro 2024 Portugal coach Roberto Martinez expressed concern after five individuals entered the pitch during his team’s win over Turkey at Euro 2024 in Dortmund. 'Today the intentions of the fans were good. But you [must] understand there’s a difficult moment if their intentions are wrong,' Martinez said. His remarks followed a similar incident in June 2024 when a pitch invader made contact with Ronaldo during a warm-up before a Nations League match against Germany.
