Mumbai Indians chase 200+ targets thrice in IPL 2026 amid PBKS struggles

Mumbai Indians have successfully chased 200-plus targets three times in IPL 2026 alone, highlighting their dominance in high-pressure run chases.

MI leads 200-plus chase records Mumbai Indians (MI) have recorded eight successful chases of 200-plus targets in the IPL, placing them second only to Punjab Kings (PBKS), who lead with eleven such chases. Notably, three of MI’s eight successful chases have occurred in the current IPL season. Both teams also share the record for the most 200-plus target chases in all T20 cricket globally. ## PBKS face record chases Punjab Kings (PBKS) have lost ten matches where the opposition successfully chased a 200-plus target, the highest tally in all T20 cricket. West Indies have suffered eight such defeats, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) rank second in the IPL with seven losses in 200-plus chases. ## MI's late-innings heroics MI chased down fifty target runs in the final three overs on Thursday, the most by them in an IPL match. Their previous high was 49 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2017. Across the IPL, only four teams have successfully chased fifty-plus runs in the last three overs before MI. ## Record-breaking final overs On Thursday, PBKS and MI collectively scored 107 runs in the last three overs, the third-highest total in this phase for any IPL game. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hold the record with 113 runs in 2022, while Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT) matched 111 runs in 2024. PBKS contributed 53 of those runs despite being seven wickets down by then, setting a new record for most runs added in the last three overs after losing seven or more wickets by the 18th over. ## MI's dramatic last-over wins MI have successfully chased down 15 or more runs in the 20th over seven times in the IPL. On Thursday, they needed precisely 15 runs in the final over, bowled by Xavier Bartlett. Only Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have achieved this feat more often, with nine such instances. ## PBKS concede most 200-plus totals Punjab Kings (PBKS) have conceded eight 200-plus totals in IPL 2026, the highest by any team in a single season. They are the second team ever to permit eight 200-plus totals in a T20 tournament, after Southern Punjab in the 2020 National T20 Cup. PBKS also scored 200 or more in all eight games where they conceded such totals this season, tying the record for most 200-plus totals scored by a team in a T20 tournament. ## Rising trend of 200-plus chases Twenty-eight point thirty percent of successful 200-plus target chases in the IPL this season have occurred in 2026, with fifteen out of fifty-three such chases ending successfully. The previous record was nine successful 200-plus chases in 2025. Since 2023, thirty-eight successful chases of 200-plus targets have taken place. ## Bumrah makes captaincy debut Jasprit Bumrah made his IPL captaincy debut on Thursday, becoming the third player to lead Mumbai Indians in the 2026 season. He has featured in 156 IPL matches before this debut, trailing only Ravindra Jadeja, who played 200 matches prior to his captaincy. Mumbai Indians are the fifth team in IPL history to play under three different captains in a single season, a feat last seen by MI in 2008. ## Bumrah struggles with wickets Jasprit Bumrah has gone wicketless in nine of his twelve matches in IPL 2026. In eight of those games, he bowled four overs without taking a wicket. Only Praveen Kumar, who went wicketless in nine matches while bowling four overs in 2012, has matched this record in a single IPL season.
