England coach McCullum expresses worry for Stokes amid no captaincy confirmation following latest controversy.
Head coach Brendon McCullum chose not to comment on Ben Stokes' future role as England captain, instead repeatedly emphasizing his concern for the all-rounder. Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been withdrawn from the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval while an investigation unfolds over a London nightclub incident from last week. McCullum's focus remains on supporting Stokes through the situation rather than discussing leadership matters. He stated that decisions about the captaincy will come later, with his immediate priority being Stokes’ well-being.
The absence of Stokes adds another layer of difficulty to England's ongoing challenges, coming as it does on top of a string of recent controversies involving the team. Stokes, widely regarded as one of England's finest cricketers ever, was previously cleared of affray charges stemming from an altercation outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017. In 2021, he stepped away from cricket to prioritize his mental health, showcasing the mental toll the sport can take. McCullum reiterated that the team's primary concern is Stokes' current state and ensuring he feels supported and connected with the group.
Stokes and Atkinson were two of several England players who broke the team's midnight curfew after celebrating their win in the first Test at Lord's, where Atkinson also played a role in an altercation involving a member of the security staff and a Saracens rugby player. Both Stokes and Atkinson will miss the second Test at The Oval, prompting England to make four changes to their starting XI. Joe Root will step in as captain, while Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, and uncapped players Sonny Baker and Jordan Cox have been added to the squad.
During a subdued press conference at The Oval, McCullum avoided any suggestion that Stokes will resume the captaincy role. Instead, he reiterated his commitment to supporting and caring for Stokes. When questioned about the captaincy, McCullum replied, 'What will be will be down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine. We need to make sure we look after him, rally around him, and in time we'll get on to those sorts of decisions.'
Stokes has already resumed training, with the possibility he could feature in Durham's County Championship match against Northamptonshire this Friday. When asked if Stokes' return to playing is a positive sign, McCullum paused before stating, 'I'm worried about Ben. That's it. I'll leave it at that. I'm in constant communication with him, which is great. I care for him immensely.' He added that any decisions Stokes makes about his involvement will be his own, and that he encourages Stokes to do what brings him joy and satisfaction.
