Maxwell willing to feature for Victoria in domestic one-day matches despite ODI retirement

Glenn Maxwell remains open to playing 50-over domestic matches for Victoria when needed despite his international ODI retirement.

Contract changes for Maxwell and Short

Two players, Glenn Maxwell and Peter Short, lost their national contracts last month. Maxwell now focuses only on T20 cricket in a contract season where Australia will play just five T20I games. Short was omitted from the T20 World Cup squad and has been on the fringes of Australia's primary ODI team in recent periods.

State contract trend shifts

Traditionally, players not retained on national contracts return to state lists, but a growing number of senior limited-overs cricketers playing franchise cricket overseas now decline state deals. This allows them to manage their schedules while still keeping doors open to represent their state when free from overseas commitments.

Weatherald joins South Australia

Western Australian batter Travis Weatherald has rejoined South Australia, the back-to-back Sheffield Shield champions. This move follows recent contract announcements affecting multiple players across domestic circuits.

Victoria's contract updates

Weatherald and left-arm fast-medium bowler Michael Neser have been included in Cricket Australia's latest contract list, while fast bowler Gurinder Richardson has been left out. These adjustments reflect shifting priorities and form trends within the squad.

Maxwell's Victoria involvement

At 38, Maxwell has no obligation to accept a state deal as he is now primarily seen as a T20 specialist. However, informal talks have taken place with Victoria about featuring in 50-over domestic matches when required. This comes despite his ODI retirement following the 2025 Champions Trophy. Maxwell previously played two One-Day Cup games for Victoria in September of the prior year, scoring his first List A century for the state against Queensland during that stint. Those matches served as his preparation for a subsequent T20I tour of New Zealand. Maxwell continues to express interest in remaining in T20I contention even as international age milestones approach.

Short's Victoria link maintained

Peter Short, aged 30, appeared in four Sheffield Shield and five One-Day Cup matches for Victoria during the last summer. He missed the Shield final due to an IPL commitment with Chennai Super Kings. Despite relocating to Queensland with his family, Victoria appreciated his dedication to training and playing with the team throughout the season, even with interstate travel. He will remain available for Victoria in both formats next summer. With the ILT20 shifting to November ahead of the BBL, declining a state deal means he will not need a No Objection Certificate to compete in the UAE while Shield cricket is in progress.

Victoria's retained and departing players

Victoria retained young talents Fergus O'Neill and Campbell Kellaway during the season. Fast bowler Xavier Crone and left-arm wrist spinner Callum Stow lost their contracts but will stay connected to the state's program. Wicketkeeper Jai Lemire has moved interstate in search of additional opportunities. The state has also added Australian Under-19 representatives Tom Paddington and Aryan Sharma to their rookie list.
