Mavericks plan new arena away from downtown Dallas by 2031
The Dallas Mavericks have agreed on a site for a new arena outside downtown Dallas, targeting completion by 2031.
New arena site agreement The Dallas Mavericks have reached a preliminary deal for a new arena site, marking the franchise’s first relocation outside downtown Dallas in 2031. The agreement covers 104 acres at the former location of a shopping mall roughly 10 miles north of downtown. Demolition of Valley View Mall in north Dallas was completed three years ago. The team had also explored a downtown option at the current City Hall site, where the Dallas City Council is still deciding whether to renovate or replace the building. ## Lease expiration drives timeline Mavericks CEO Rick Welts stated the club aimed to finalize the potential site by July to ensure construction could be completed before 2031. That year coincides with the expiration of the team’s lease at American Airlines Center. Welts and Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont emphasized their long-standing goal to keep the franchise in Dallas and construct a basketball-only arena. Before joining the Mavericks again, Welts led the Golden State Warriors’ transition from Oakland to Chase Center in San Francisco after five decades in the Bay Area. ## Arena vision and economic impact The Mavericks described their vision for a dynamic mixed-use development centered around a modern arena, including dining, entertainment, public parks, and family-friendly attractions. The team emphasized that, if executed thoughtfully with community input, the project could become a significant economic driver for Dallas. The Mavericks previously played at Reunion Arena in downtown’s southwest corner for 21 years before moving just over a mile north to American Airlines Center. ## Legal and tenant considerations The Mavericks and their co-tenant, the NHL’s Dallas Stars, are involved in a legal disagreement regarding arena relocations for both teams. The Stars are weighing options to remain at American Airlines Center or build a new arena in Dallas or a nearby suburb. The Mavericks brought Rick Welts out of retirement specifically to oversee the arena project, drawing on his experience with the Warriors’ facility move.
