Marcus North set to become England's first foreign national selector in 2026

England is preparing to appoint former Australia all-rounder Marcus North as their new national selector for the men's team.

Selection confirmed soon England is moving forward with plans to name former Australia international Marcus North as their next national selector. The decision follows final interviews conducted this week. While the appointment is not yet officially confirmed, North would make history as the first foreigner to lead England's men's team selection. The England and Wales Cricket Board has not issued any statement regarding the move. ## North's cricket background Marcus North brings extensive experience to the role, having played 21 Test matches for Australia, including two Ashes series. Since 2018, he has served as the director of cricket at Durham, one of England’s six first-class counties where he previously played domestic cricket. During his time at Durham, North has worked closely with England Test captain Ben Stokes. North is expected to take over from Luke Wright, marking the most significant change in England’s backroom staff since the 4-1 Ashes defeat. ## Changes in leadership team Luke Wright’s departure as selector, after more than three years in the role, was a personal decision and unrelated to England’s performance in Australia. North will join head coach Brendon McCullum, director of cricket Rob Key, and the Test and limited-overs captains—Ben Stokes and Harry Brook—in selecting England squads. He will also have some input on the final playing XI for matches. Performance director Ed Barney and head of player identification David Court are part of the selection process. ## North's upcoming selector role North’s responsibilities will include involvement in selecting the England Lions squad, coordinating with county teams, and leading a group of talent scouts. Under McCullum’s leadership, England has often overlooked established county performers in favor of players deemed to have the right skills for international cricket. North’s appointment may bring a more balanced approach to England’s selection strategy. ## Immediate England squad plans North’s involvement in selecting the squad for the first Test against New Zealand may be limited. The squad is scheduled to be announced during the week beginning May 18, 2026, with a training camp in Loughborough starting on May 25. England’s heavy defeat in Australia has led to discussions about replacing Zak Crawley as an opener, with Durham’s Emilio Gay and Somerset’s James Rew viewed as leading candidates for the role. ## Spin and seam bowling considerations The selection process will also focus on identifying frontline spinners and seam bowlers to strengthen the fast-bowling unit. Around 80 candidates applied for the selector position in April 2026. These applications were narrowed down through initial discussions before final interviews were held. ## ECB's selector requirements When inviting applications, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) specified it was seeking candidates with significant professional experience and deep knowledge of international and first-class cricket, including awareness of emerging talent and county networks. The role also required applicants to have proven experience in talent identification, a strong grasp of cricket data and analytics, and the ability to manage relationships with players at both international and county levels.
