Marcus Harris scored an unbeaten 135 as Lancashire ended day one at 356-7 against Durham in the County Championship Division Two.
Marcus Harris crafted his second Championship century of the season as Lancashire dominated the opening day against Durham at the Banks Homes Riverside. The Australian opener defied multiple Durham breakthroughs while anchoring the innings, finishing on 135 not out. His resistance came despite early pressure from Durham’s bowlers, who capitalized on dropped catches to claim three wickets in the morning session.
The match began with a closely contested morning session as both teams fought for control. Durham removed three Lancashire batsmen, including George Balderson for 14, caught at second slip off Matthew Potts. Josh Bohannon quickly followed, dismissing Josh Conners for five in his first ball of the season, caught by Potts at cover. Conners, however, troubled both Keaton Jennings and Harris with sharp deliveries, though neither Lancashire opener surrendered their wicket.
Lancashire’s fortunes turned when multiple catches were spurned, allowing Harris a lifeline. Kasey Aldridge first failed to hold an edge from Ben Raine at second slip when Jennings was on 26, and David Bedingham dropped him at third slip moments later. Harris then received another reprieve when Ollie Robinson spilled a chance off Raine when Harris had scored 22. At the other end, Jennings’ resistance ended when he edged Aldridge to the keeper for 44.
After lunch, Michael Jones departed for 10, caught off Conners at third slip, but Harris continued his steady accumulation. His fifty came quickly, marking his third half-century of the season. Matty Hurst joined Harris and added stability, launching the first six of the innings before falling lbw to Raine for 32. Arav Shetty’s 18 ended when Raine claimed him caught behind just before tea, leaving Harris and Paul Coughlin to steer Lancashire toward bonus points.
Harris sealed his third first-class century of the campaign shortly after tea, driving a single to reach three figures. He and Coughlin pushed Lancashire past 300, securing a second bonus point, though Coughlin was removed by Raine shortly after. Tom Bailey then supported Harris at the crease, helping the visitors surpass 350 and claim a third bonus point. The eighth-wicket stand of 64 ensured Lancashire finished day one strongly at 356-7.
Durham’s bowlers struggled with consistency despite early breakthroughs, as multiple catches went unclaimed. Their inability to dismiss Harris and Jennings when set up allowed Lancashire to post a commanding total. Ben Raine finished with three wickets, but his efforts were overshadowed by the missed opportunities that gifted Harris and his partners crucial opportunities.
