Luke Wells extends stay with Lancashire through 2028 season

Luke Wells has agreed to a new contract keeping him at Lancashire until the end of the 2028 season despite a recent shoulder injury.

Contract extension details Injured top-order batter Luke Wells has finalized a fresh agreement with Lancashire, ensuring his stay at the club until 2028. The new deal was settled during the winter window, prior to the 35-year-old’s shoulder dislocation in a match against Gloucestershire last month. As a left-handed batter and occasional leg-spin bowler, Wells underwent surgery for his shoulder, and the club has not yet provided a timeline for his return. The three-year extension was arranged before the 2024 season, reinforcing Lancashire’s long-term commitment to the veteran player. ## Club’s decision explained Lancashire’s director of cricket Mark Chilton confirmed that extending Wells’ contract was an obvious choice. Speaking on local radio, he stated the decision was straightforward once Wells expressed interest in a prolonged stay. "Not everyone was aware, but a deal had been agreed during the winter to commit to Luke to the end of 2028. Ultimately, it wasn’t that difficult a decision with Luke if I’m honest with you. He definitely wanted to commit to a longer-term deal or a medium-term deal and we were happy to commit to that as well." ## Player’s impact and value Wells arrived at Lancashire in 2021 after spending a decade with his home county Sussex. Chilton emphasized the batter’s multifaceted contributions across formats, highlighting his leadership and vocal presence in the dressing room. "We're about developing players, but Luke has proved across all formats what value he can bring to the team," he explained. "He's also a very good person to have in a changing room. He's got strong views, but he's a real team man. Sometimes changing rooms need a little bit of disturbance, or however you want to call it. He brings a very healthy challenge to a changing room because he's very team orientated."
