Liverpool's Koumas set to showcase value after Wales strike
At 19, Lewis Koumas marked his Wales debut with a late goal, extending his club career with crucial loans.
Young striker reflects on journey Liverpool attacker Lewis Koumas, aged 19, has already made his mark in senior football despite his young age. The forward contributed to Hull City's promotion before returning to his parent club and has earned 11 senior caps for Wales. Koumas remains grounded about his progress, admitting his national team journey is still in its early stages. "I don't really think [Wales fans] have seen anything from me yet if I'm going to be honest," he mentioned ahead of Wales' June fixtures. "I've only had some cameos to try and show myself so I need to work harder and show a little bit more to try and get the trust of the gaffer. Hopefully I can do that and I want to show what I can really do in a Welsh shirt. I definitely want to be a top player at the top level and internationally I want to play for Wales as much as I can." ## Goal secures draw against Ghana Koumas followed up on his promise to Welsh supporters by scoring a late header from Neco Williams' cross, earning Wales a 1-1 draw with Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium. The goal came almost exactly two years after his international debut under Robert Page against Gibraltar in June 2024. Under current manager Craig Bellamy, Koumas has become a frequent squad member, now aiming to secure a permanent place in the starting lineup. "He's really, really supportive, he's a really good coach," Koumas shared about Bellamy. "Ultimately I like trying to see what I can take from his game and put it into mine because he was a top, top player and he scored goals and that's exactly what I want to do. He's a great role model to work off and to be with him day-to-day here when I get called up to camp is a blessing." ## Loan spells fuel development Koumas split the 2025-26 season on loan, first at Birmingham City where he made 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring once. His second loan at Hull City proved more successful, with three goals in 19 appearances helping the Tigers secure Premier League promotion via the Championship play-offs. Reflecting on Hull's Wembley victory, Koumas said: "It's one of the best days of my life for sure and memories that will stay with me forever. I'm really happy with the way my development's going. It's been a good two years. I think I've played nearly 110 games now so I'm just really happy with how it's going and just excited for what's next." ## Liverpool changes and future plans Liverpool confirmed the dismissal of manager Arne Slot on May 30, 2026, yet Koumas does not see this affecting his immediate plans. He expects to continue his development through another loan spell from Anfield, focusing on consistent performance. "I don't really think the plan changes for me," he stated. "It's just going to be how it's always been, to just keep my head down, keep working hard, and if I impress, I impress. So let's see what happens."
