Knicks owner Dolan urges 10-week sacrifices before 2026 title push
James Dolan told the Knicks in April they could win the 2026 NBA Finals with a 10-week commitment to team goals.
April locker room speech James Dolan, the owner of the New York Knicks, delivered a passionate address to his players before the playoffs began. He encouraged them to embrace the moment and make specific sacrifices to reach their championship ambitions. A video of the speech, shared by Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart through their podcast called 'Roommates Show,' was recorded on April 3 when five regular-season games remained. The Knicks then won four of those final contests, rested their starters in the last game, and launched a 16-3 surge that included a franchise-record 13 straight victories. This run culminated in a five-game series win over the San Antonio Spurs. ## Dolan's championship vision Dolan expressed confidence in the team’s potential, telling them, 'This team can win it all.' He held a sheet of paper that appeared to contain prepared notes as he spoke. 'I don't know if you understand what it would mean for you to win the championship this year..it would be life changing for all of you. It will stick with you for the rest of your lives and if you don't win it, you'll be thinking about it the rest of your lives, and so will I.' ## Coaching change and roster support Dolan discussed the decision to replace Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown, who was present during the speech. He acknowledged Thibodeau’s contributions, echoing praise he had shared publicly on a New York radio program in early January, but defended the coaching change. He explained that the roster assembled aligned with his and Knicks president Leon Rose’s vision, as they believed it had the talent needed to win a title. 'So we thought that you needed a coach that would pull you together, that would have you play as a team,' Dolan said. 'And although it's not been perfect, but we believe that together a joint effort would be better for the team that would give us a shot at winning a championship rather than relying on one person's opinion, and that's the team that we have now.' ## 10-week sacrifice for lifelong glory Dolan framed the coming playoff run as a brief but transformative period with lifelong rewards if the Knicks could end their 53-year title drought. 'When people introduce you, even if you become the President of the United States, right, they'll start off with 'NBA champion 2026,' I guarantee it,' he remarked. 'We have a rare and unique opportunity to do it. And it's not just you guys, the players, it's all of us.' He pressed the team to prioritize commitment over distractions during the stretch. ## Lifestyle and team-first demands Among the sacrifices Dolan suggested was abstaining from certain personal activities. 'I had this idea that maybe you should give up sex for the next 10 weeks,' he said with a laugh. 'The Spartans, they denied themselves, right, so they can have an edge. Get the edge. Go home, talk to your wives..don't tell them it was my idea. But let them know what this is going to be like, what this commitment is going to be like.' He promised championship rings for wives and partners 'when we win the championship' and demanded total trust in the coaching staff. ## Blind obedience to coaching plan Dolan made it clear that players must fully follow the guidance of their coach during the playoffs. 'Your coach has the answers to what we need to do in order to win,' he stated. 'You have to take his guidance. Dedicate yourselves to correcting the things that he has pointed out to you. You got to leave nothing on the table; you must go for it.'
