KKR ride late IPL 2026 surge back into playoff contention

KKR won four straight games after losing five of six to climb into playoff contention with nine points from ten matches.

Rocky start to IPL 2026

Kolkata Knight Riders began IPL 2026 with five defeats and one washed-out match in their first six games. Their struggles were so pronounced that even their single point from the washout looked like a possible season total. Yet the IPL's unpredictable nature means trends shift, and KKR have now flipped their fortunes completely. Four consecutive victories have reignited their campaign, prompting Deep Dasgupta to suggest a late playoff dash is within reach.

Spinners swing momentum in second half

Deep Dasgupta highlighted two key reasons behind KKR's mid-season revival. First, spinner Varun Chakravarthy struggled early, missing eight overs in the first half. Second, grounds used earlier in the tournament became slower, amplifying spinners' influence. Dasgupta believes KKR's structure favors stronger showings in the second half. 'A couple of things one is obviously first half of the season Varun [Chakravarthy] didn't have a good start. They depend a lot on those two bowlers Varun and Sunil [Narine]. Eight overs, and two, second half [of the IPL], a lot of these pitches or venues which have been used so far are getting a little tired. Where the spinners' role become that much more important.'

Allen's blistering century powers famous win

Finn Allen's 47-ball century delivered a commanding victory for KKR against Delhi Capitals. The explosive innings shifted control firmly in KKR's favor. Alagappan Muthu described it as the catalyst behind their commanding win. The performance gave KKR's batting lineup renewed confidence ahead of critical fixtures. Allen's knock also drew praise for its sheer dominance with the bat.

Spin-friendly surface aids spinners' cause

KKR's spinners received crucial support against Delhi Capitals as Allen's aggression allowed them breathing room. Cameron Green, who bowled one over and scored an unbeaten 33 off 27 balls alongside Allen, echoed Dasgupta's view. 'Yeah, I think our team was probably just finding the right combination and where guys should bat to best suit the team. So I think we obviously took a few games to work that out. I think we've got to a really good place now.'

RCB clash in Raipur looms large

KKR's next fixture, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, takes place in Raipur, a venue where no IPL matches have been held in a decade. This effectively makes it a neutral ground. Mitchell McClenaghan labeled the upcoming two games as most critical, naming them RCB and Gujarat Titans. 'Those next two games are the most important out there. You have RCB and you have GT. So those two are going to be critical because those are the other teams that are realistically in the running [for the playoffs], and if you can get above them [on the points table] and if you see Punjab [Kings, PBKS] continue to slide and…'

KKR's culture remains unshaken despite poor start

Even during their winless streak, Cameron Green insisted KKR's fighting spirit never wavered. He credited the team's positive culture and support staff for maintaining morale despite heavy losses. 'I didn't think the belief was ever gone. We've had like a really good culture this whole tournament, even before we won a game.'

Playoffs still possible with four more wins

Currently sitting at nine points from ten games and seventh on the table, KKR still harbor playoff hopes. A perfect run of four victories would lift them to 17 points, potentially securing a playoff berth. Their fate, however, depends on both their own performances and results elsewhere. Green acknowledged the team's resilience, saying, 'To lose those games meant a lot. So yeah, we fought really hard to get back into it and then I think, yeah, our bowlers have obviously been awesome all comp.'
