Kent set 384-run target for Derbyshire in Division Two clash

Kent scored 352 and 335 to set Derbyshire a challenging 384-run chase in Canterbury.

Kent's strong second innings Kent piled up 335 runs in their second innings at Canterbury, anchored by a crucial stand of 184 between Chris Benjamin and Joey Evison. Benjamin went on to score 123, his first Kent century and second first-class hundred, while Evison contributed 88. Rory Haydon claimed five more wickets to finish with match figures of 10 for 163. This left Derbyshire needing 365 more runs to win, with only 11 overs remaining on the final day. ## Derbyshire's shaky start Derbyshire started their chase poorly, collapsing to 19 for one at stumps, still 364 runs behind. Caleb Jewell was dismissed by Matt Milnes off the last ball of the day, caught behind after a brief struggle. The visitors had earlier let Kent off the hook by taking two quick wickets in the opening over to reduce the hosts to 55 for five. ## Early drama at the crease Kent struggled early on day three, losing Sam Northeast first ball when Tawanda Muyeye called for a risky single and Northeast failed to ground his bat. Rory Haydon then trapped Daniel Bell-Drummond lbw for four, while Ekansh Singh was caught at point after a fumble off Haydon, leaving Kent at 12 for two. A 67-run sixth-wicket stand between Muyeye and Benjamin briefly steadied the innings. ## Partnership shifts the game Muyeye fell for 36 after a dropped catch by Wayne Madsen, and he was soon bowled by Haydon for 38. At this stage, Kent were 122 for six, but Benjamin and Evison added 132 runs before lunch to revive their innings. A rain interruption delayed play by ten overs, but the pair returned to bat throughout the afternoon session. ## Benjamin and Evison dominate The partnership began slowly, but both batters took singles against Shoaib Bashir before boundaries started flowing, including a six off Bashir from Evison. By tea, the score was 248 for six, and Benjamin brought up his Kent debut century with a fine-leg glance off Matthew Montgomery. Evison then missed his third first-class hundred by holing out to Zak Chappell for 88. ## Late wickets reduce Kent's lead Benjamin fell four short of his career-best score when Martin Andersson strangled his drive. Keith Dudgeon was then caught by Luis Reece at deep-midwicket off Andersson, ending Kent's innings at 335. This left Derbyshire with 11 overs to survive the final session, but Matt Milnes dismissed Caleb Jewell on the penultimate ball to keep the pressure on. ## Derbyshire face tough chase Derbyshire's target of 384 stands as their highest-ever successful chase against Kent, surpassing their previous best of 298 for eight at Derby in 2012. Harry Came finished unbeaten on 16 as the visitors closed at 19 for one. With 365 runs still required, Derbyshire face an uphill battle to pull off an unlikely victory.
