Jazz and Kessler fail to agree on $140M five-year contract in 2026

Utah Jazz and restricted free agent center Walker Kessler remain apart after a $140 million, five-year offer failed to close the gap.

Utah Jazz have tabled a historic five-year, approximately $140 million offer for restricted free agent center Walker Kessler in 2026, the richest deal ever for a non–All-Star big man. The Jazz retain full right to match any outside contract Kessler signs as a restricted free agent. The proposal marks the clearest sign yet of Utah’s long-term commitment to its young defensive anchor.

Walker Kessler has quickly become one of the NBA’s most feared rim protectors and rebounders despite playing only five games last season due to shoulder surgery. In 2024–25, he ranked second in blocks (2.4 per game) and fifth in rebounds (12.2 per game) while averaging 11.1 points on 66.3 percent shooting from the field. His efficiency and defensive impact make him a cornerstone piece for the Jazz moving forward.

Keyonte George’s future with the Jazz remains unsettled despite flashes of brilliance. After two inconsistent seasons, George exploded in 2025–26, posting career highs of 23.6 points and 6.1 assists per game with a true shooting percentage of .609.

Utah wants to see another full season of that production before green-lighting a near-maximum rookie extension. Draft plans are taking shape as Utah prepares for its second overall pick. Top prospect Darryn Peterson of Kansas is reportedly skipping a workout with the Jazz and will only meet with the team with the first pick. Meanwhile, BYU guard AJ Dybantsa has already visited both Utah and their draft counterpart, setting up a clear comparison.

Looking ahead, the Jazz face critical decisions on Kessler’s contract, George’s extension, and the draft. With a franchise center on the line and draft capital in play, the summer of 2026 could reshape Utah’s roster and championship timeline in a single offseason.
