India T20I squad selection debate: Sooryavanshi replaces Suryakumar?
Selectors face tough choices on captaincy and young talents for Ireland, England, and Asian Games in 2026.
Selection panel meets On Saturday, the panel led by Ajit Agarkar will meet in Mumbai to finalize squads for India's T20I series in Ireland with two matches in June, followed by five games in England in July, and the 2026 Asian Games in Japan set for September. With the West Indies series happening simultaneously, the group must decide whether to prioritize a top squad for the Asian Games where medals are on the line. For the tour of the UK, the selectors may look at standout performers from the 2026 IPL season. ## Captaincy dilemma for Suryakumar The most urgent question for the panel is whether to keep Suryakumar Yadav as captain. Although India became the first team to retain the T20 World Cup under his leadership, his batting form has been questioned this year. In the 2026 IPL, he managed just 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 with a strike rate of 147.54, numbers that fell short of expectations for a multiple IPL champion. Even in the T20 World Cup before the IPL, his performance wasn't strong, with 242 runs in nine innings and a strike rate of 136.72. His best display came in the opening game against the USA in Mumbai, where he scored an unbeaten 84 and earned the Player-of-the-Match award. ## Sooryavanshi's rapid rise The selectors are convinced that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi deserves a chance in T20Is after his explosive first full IPL season and his ability to handle pressure situations. The only question is how to fit him into the playing XI, given that Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan formed the top order during India’s successful T20 World Cup defense in March. One potential solution could involve rotating openers to give Sooryavanshi a platform to showcase his talent at a higher level. ## Shreyas and Patidar in contention Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar have emerged as standout leaders in the last two IPL seasons. Patidar joined an exclusive group of captains by leading his franchise to back-to-back IPL titles this season, while Shreyas has impressed since joining Punjab Kings in 2025, guiding them to the final in 2025. Shreyas had successful stints with Delhi Capitals and won the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, making him a strong candidate for India’s T20 captaincy. However, finding a spot for either player remains a challenge, as Shreyas couldn’t secure a place during the World Cup. ## All-rounder options for the UK tour The selectors included Hardik in the ODI squad for the home series against Afghanistan to assess his all-round abilities, including his ability to bowl the full ten-over quota if needed. This focus will continue as they finalize the best 15 for the 2027 ODI World Cup. For the T20Is starting with the UK tour, they may consider Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube to fill the all-rounder role.
