Hampshire secure South African allrounder Delano Potgieter on short-term deal in 2026
Hampshire have signed South African allrounder Delano Potgieter on a short-term contract ahead of the 2026 season.
Potgieter joins Hampshire Delano Potgieter, aged 29, will join Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl as the club faces a period of transition. Liam Dawson's red-ball retirement on Wednesday has added to the uncertainty, while Hampshire currently occupy the bottom position in Division One ahead of Friday's home match against Nottinghamshire, the league leaders. Potgieter's arrival coincides with a challenging phase for the side, who will also prepare to face the champions in their next fixture. ## Contract and availability details The allrounder will remain with Hampshire throughout their 2026 Blast campaign, which kicks off at Taunton on May 22. His compatriot Tristan Stubbs is expected to join after completing his IPL duties with Delhi Capitals. Additionally, Potgieter will be available for Hampshire's Championship matches against Surrey and Sussex in June, providing valuable cover during key fixtures. ## Domestic credentials and achievements Potgieter brings a strong domestic record from South Africa to Hampshire. Across 50 first-class appearances, he has claimed 128 wickets at an average of 23.61 and amassed 2,564 runs at 44.20, including five centuries and nine half-centuries. His red-ball performances highlight his dual threat with both bat and ball in domestic competitions. ## T20 contributions and recent form In T20 cricket, Potgieter has contributed significantly, scoring 1,329 runs and taking 49 wickets in 97 matches. His best bowling figures in the format stand at 5 for 10, achieved for MI Cape Town against Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league. His recent performances have demonstrated his value as a match-winner in the shortest format. ## Coach's prior familiarity Hampshire's head coach Russell Domingo shares a pre-existing relationship with Potgieter, having previously managed him at Gauteng in the recent CSA 4-Day Series. Under Domingo's leadership, Potgieter excelled, scoring 606 runs—the second-highest for his team—at an average of 101 and taking ten wickets in seven games. This partnership is expected to benefit Hampshire as they integrate him into the squad.
