Former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Keith Piper passes away at age 56

Former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Keith Piper died at the age of 56 after a long career with the Bears.

Long and successful career Former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Keith Piper has died at the age of 56. Piper played 443 matches for Warwickshire, securing 848 dismissals and scoring 5,589 runs during his tenure. His contributions helped the Bears claim 10 trophies from his debut in 1989 to his final season in 2005. Between 1993 and 1995 alone, six trophies were added as Warwickshire dominated the decade. ## Landmark 1994 season Piper was instrumental in Warwickshire's historic 1994 season, playing under captain Dermot Reeve. That year, the Bears secured the County Championship, the 40-over Sunday league, and the 55-over Benson and Hedges Cup. The only trophy they missed was the 60-over Natwest Trophy, lost to Worcestershire in the final at Lord's. Piper also set a county record with seven catches in an innings against Essex during that season. ## Notable performances and records In 1994, Piper achieved a career-best score of 116 not out against Durham at Edgbaston, supporting Brian Lara's world-record unbeaten 501 runs. That century was one of two he scored in first-class cricket, along with 14 half-centuries, contributing to 4,618 first-class runs overall. He finished his first-class career with 540 dismissals, over 500 of which were catches, and added 308 dismissals in limited-overs matches. ## International recognition and setbacks Although Piper never appeared for England, his strong 1994 performances earned him selection for an A tour to India that winter. The following year, he was again chosen for an A tour to Pakistan after Warwickshire won the County Championship and Natwest Trophy. His career faced challenges, including a one-match ban and a £500 fine for failing a drugs test in 1997. In 2005, he tested positive for cannabis in the season opener, leading to a four-month suspension and the eventual end of his playing contract at Edgbaston. ## Coaching contributions after retirement After his playing career ended, Piper remained with Warwickshire as the second XI coach until 2008. He later joined Leicestershire's coaching staff in July 2015, serving as elite development coach before leaving in 2016. Warwickshire released a statement expressing sadness at the news of Piper's passing, offering condolences to his family and friends.
