Flintoff named Sydney Thunder BBL coach in club's biggest off-field signing ever
Sydney Thunder appoint Andrew Flintoff as BBL coach in their most significant off-field acquisition to date.
New Thunder appointment Andrew Flintoff is set to begin his first coaching role in the Big Bash League after previously serving as head coach of Northern Superchargers in The Hundred for two seasons in 2024 and 2025, guiding them to fourth and third-place finishes respectively. Prior to that, Flintoff held the position of England Lions coach, including leading the side on a tour of Australia last summer that paralleled the Ashes schedule. His move to Sydney Thunder may affect his availability for the England Lions' tour to South Africa in December, which overlaps with the start of the BBL season. Flintoff also contributed as a consultant to England's white-ball teams during Matthew Mott's tenure as coach. ## Club celebrates landmark signing Trent Copeland, Sydney Thunder's general manager, described Flintoff's appointment as a transformative moment for the club and the broader BBL landscape. 'This is a monumental day in the history of Sydney Thunder, and the BBL more broadly,' Copeland stated. 'Fred brings something truly unique to Sydney Thunder. He's a global icon of the game, but more importantly he is a modern leader who knows how to foster high-performance environments, connect with players as individuals, and establish lasting standards. His enthusiasm for the sport, coaching philosophy and deep understanding of Australian cricket and our Thunder program shone through during the selection process. The objective isn't merely short-term success; it's about driving a cultural shift and building an identity that will lay the groundwork for long-term achievements.' ## Transition from Bayliss to Flintoff Flintoff takes charge following Trevor Bayliss, who led England to ODI World Cup glory and departed Sydney Thunder after five seasons in charge. During Bayliss' tenure, Thunder reached the BBL final in 2024-25 but finished last in both the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons. Flintoff brings prior BBL experience from his seven matches with Brisbane Heat in the 2014-15 season. ## Flintoff's vision for the squad Flintoff expressed excitement about joining Sydney Thunder, emphasizing his optimism for the road ahead. 'I can't wait to get over there and get started,' he said. 'I'm approaching this with a great deal of hope. When you look at the franchise, the players, the backing, I think there's something really special to build on here. The squad is a genuine mix of talent. You've got David Warner, Chris Green, Daniel Sams – some of these senior players are established stars, and you just want to create an atmosphere where they can excel. We've already seen how good they are. I saw Sam Konstas face England Under-19s, against one of my sons – absolutely outstanding talent. Matthew Gilkes and Tanveer Sangha are cut from the same cloth. I want our players to engage with the fans who come to watch us. I want them to love playing the game.' ## Coaching philosophy and captaincy question Flintoff outlined his core principles, blending enjoyment with relentless effort. 'However, all that is underpinned by hard work.. I want them to play with passion and leave everything out there on the field. Around the world now, players have options, but one of my goals over my time with Sydney Thunder is that every player leaves thinking, 'that's the best part of the year, that's a team I want to be part of.' I'm thrilled to come over, get involved, and lead this team. My mission is to deliver the best possible performance for the team and everyone who supports us.' ## Warner's captaincy future in focus One of Flintoff's earliest priorities will be addressing the captaincy situation surrounding David Warner, who was charged with drink driving in April. Warner is expected to enter a guilty plea when his case returns to court on June 24.
