Fifa forces fans to pay after website gave out free World Cup tickets in 2026
About 60 fans received free World Cup tickets due to a website error and must now pay full price within seven days.
Fifa confirms ticketing mistake The global football governing body recently acknowledged that a technical error on its official website led to around 60 supporters successfully acquiring World Cup tickets without charge. In response, these tickets have since been canceled and the affected fans have been instructed to re-purchase them at the standard rates. A statement explained that on June 3, 2026, about 60 fans received notifications about the free tickets because of a prior payment processing failure during the checkout step. The organization expressed regret for any frustration the situation may have caused. ## Deadline set for fans to pay A letter shared by Ticket Talk Network, a social media platform known for pointing out ticketing mistakes, revealed that the impacted fans have a one-week window to settle the full price for their World Cup tickets before the entries are permanently removed from their accounts. The affected tickets were reportedly allocated for group stage matches scheduled in Toronto, Canada. The tournament, jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, is set to begin on June 11, 2026. ## Ongoing ticketing troubles for Fifa This incident is the latest in a series of ticketing problems for the organization, which had promised that every match would be sold out. Despite this assurance, there are still available seats less than a week before the competition kicks off. Last week, legal authorities from New York and New Jersey opened an inquiry into the organization’s ticketing methods, following allegations of artificially inflating prices and misleading supporters. ## Fifa’s pricing strategy under scrutiny The governing body has implemented a pricing system it calls ‘variable pricing’ for ticket sales, which allows prices to be adjusted during different sales phases based on demand and availability. The final open sales period began in April 2026, with an announcement that additional tickets could be released right up to the tournament’s start.
