A 71-year-old Nottinghamshire man was arrested during Everton's 3-3 draw with Manchester City for alleged racial abuse toward Antoine Semenyo.
A 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was arrested by Merseyside Police during Everton’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Monday.
The game at Goodison Park ended in a 3-3 draw.
The supporter was held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense after reports from fans and stewards.
The investigation is ongoing, with police working closely with Everton FC to gather evidence.
The arrested man was released under strict bail conditions, which prohibit him from being within one mile of any designated sports stadium.
These restrictions apply from four hours before kickoff until four hours after the match ends.
The conditions are tied to ongoing legal proceedings, ensuring he does not return to stadiums during this period.
Everton FC strongly condemned the alleged racist behavior, issuing a statement rejecting all forms of racism and discrimination in football.
The club emphasized that such conduct has no place in stadiums, sports, or society.
Everton pledged full cooperation with authorities and vowed to enforce its zero-tolerance policy against racism, labeling the incident as completely unacceptable.
This is the second time this season that Antoine Semenyo, a 26-year-old Ghana international, has faced racial abuse.
Earlier in the season, he reported racist abuse from a spectator during a 4-2 loss at Liverpool while playing for Bournemouth.
Semenyo has previously called for stronger measures against racism in football, including potential prison sentences for offenders.
Manchester City also responded to recent incidents of racism, expressing strong disappointment over racial abuse directed at defender Marc Guehi, 25, on social media following the match.
The club condemned the online abuse as vile and unacceptable, reaffirming its commitment to eradicating discrimination from the sport entirely.
Both clubs continue to support the affected players as investigations proceed.
