Domantas Sabonis, born in 1996, is a professional basketball player with a notable career spanning Europe and the NBA. His journey includes stints with teams like Unicaja Málaga, Gonzaga University, and multiple NBA franchises.
Domantas Sabonis entered the world on May 3, 1996, in Portland, Oregon. His mother, Ingrida Mikelionytė, held the title of inaugural Miss Lithuania, while his father, Arvydas Sabonis, was a professional basketball player active with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. Domantas grew up with two older brothers, Žygis and Tautvydas, and a younger sister named Aušrinė. In 2004, following his father’s retirement from basketball, the entire family moved to Málaga, Spain. At just 16 years old, Sabonis made his professional debut in 2012 with the Spanish team Unicaja Málaga. The following season, he was loaned to Clínicas Rincón before returning to Unicaja for the 2013-14 campaign, where he debuted in the Liga ACB. Early the next year, he earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors after posting averages of 13 points and 11 rebounds over 26 minutes. Following an impressive freshman season, he was named to the All-WCC second team and the WCC All-Freshman team. Sabonis helped Gonzaga capture the West Coast Conference title by defeating the BYU Cougars and later guided the team to the Elite Eight during March Madness. His second season at Gonzaga commenced with a personal best of 26 points in a victory over Northern Arizona. He surpassed that achievement in December with 36 points. For the regular season, he earned a spot on the All-WCC first team. During his second March Madness appearance, he led the Bulldogs to the Sweet 16, where they were stopped by the Syracuse Orange. By the conclusion of his sophomore year in spring 2016, Sabonis had doubled every statistical category from his freshman season. His Gonzaga tenure ended when he declared for the NBA draft. Selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic, Sabonis was immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. During his lone season with the Thunder, he averaged 5.9 points per game across 81 contests and 66 starts. The team reached the playoffs but was eliminated in the first round by the Houston Rockets.
