Derbyshire piled up 342-3 against Northamptonshire in Division Two, with Caleb Jewell's 91* leading a strong batting display.
Caleb Jewell rebounded from a run of poor performances by scoring an unbeaten 91 as Derbyshire seized control on day one against Northamptonshire. The Tasmanian opener moved down the order after scoring just 58 runs across his previous six innings. His steady innings anchored the innings, helping Derbyshire reach a commanding 342-3 at close of play. The home side needed a lift after losing three straight games and found it in confident batting.
Harry Came and Luis Reece saw Derbyshire to lunch without trouble, batting steadily on a placid pitch at Derby. A century opening stand was reached before lunch, marking Derbyshire’s first of the season. The pair had previously combined for six first-class century stands, but their seventh was cut short soon after the interval when Reece tried a risky clip off Harry Conway and was caught at mid-wicket. Came continued with Matt Montgomery, adding value to their strong platform.
Montgomery reached his half-century before tea, keeping Derbyshire in a dominant position. A brief setback came when Calvin Harrison’s leg-spin accounted for Montgomery, trapped lbw after missing a defensive prod. Skipper Wayne Madsen, playing his 150th match across all competitions, then joined Jewell at the crease and began to shift momentum back toward Derbyshire.
Jewell had managed only one half-century all season and struggled early, beaten several times by Ben Sanderson. The left-hander adjusted and, with other seamers unable to match Sanderson’s control, began to dictate terms. By the close, he and Madsen had added 107 runs together, guiding Derbyshire to 342-3 despite the floodlights and a brief early finish due to bad light. The result restored confidence after three defeats.
Northamptonshire used seven bowlers in an attempt to break through but found little assistance from the pitch. Skipper Luke Procter played his 100th first-class game, helping maintain tight lines but conceding runs to Conway in his first spell. Sanderson was the most testing, removing Came with a delivery that moved away, but Northamptonshire could not build pressure after early breakthroughs. The visitors finished the day on the back foot after Derbyshire’s commanding total.
