Marc Cucurella joins Real Madrid hours before Spain's World Cup debut, raising questions about Enzo Fernández's future at Chelsea.
Marc Cucurella has officially joined Real Madrid in a deal worth up to £51.8million just hours before Spain’s opening World Cup match. The transfer was confirmed early on Monday following rapid negotiations with Chelsea. Spanish sources indicate the agreement progressed quickly, with Fernández’s situation now potentially mirroring Cucurella’s path.
Madrid’s willingness to spend heavily on Fernández remains a key factor in his potential departure from Chelsea. The Argentina midfielder is valued at £120million by Chelsea, but the club’s openness to negotiation is unclear.
Florentino Pérez suggested a potential offer of €150million (£129.6million) for Fernández, following a rejected bid for Julián Álvarez. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest but are no longer considered active suitors.
Fernández remains keen on joining Real Madrid or leaving Chelsea, though the club would prefer to retain him under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Cucurella’s departure from Chelsea comes after a season marked by managerial changes and on-field struggles. Despite winning Euro 2024 and multiple trophies under Enzo Maresca, his form declined under Liam Rosenior, leading to criticism of the club’s instability.
While Fernández faced formal consequences for similar comments, Cucurella avoided punishment but chose to leave. He praised Xabi Alonso’s project, stating: “Yes, I’m attracted to Xabi Alonso’s project. I’ve spoken with him and he inspired a lot of confidence in me.”
The sale of Cucurella provides Chelsea with a financial boost amid challenging circumstances. Finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing European competition reduced revenue, while Uefa scrutiny over squad cost rules added pressure.
Though the fee represents a small loss on his £60million 2022 purchase, accounting terms suggest a £17.5million profit. With Cucurella turning 28 soon and three years left on his contract, Chelsea likely saw this as their best chance to maximize his value.
His departure also lowers the squad’s average age, already the youngest in the Premier League. Cucurella’s exit leaves Chelsea needing a left-back replacement, as Jorrel Hato’s emergence provided limited relief under Rosenior and Calum McFarlane.
The club is targeting Argentine midfielder Valentín Barco from Strasbourg, who has experience at left-back. Defensive uncertainty persists, with Chelsea struggling to accommodate all options and some players potentially frustrated by limited minutes.
Josh Acheampong is notably not for sale despite the squad’s congestion. Cucurella’s signing aligns with Real Madrid’s rebuilding plans under returning manager José Mourinho, who aims to restore the club’s competitive edge.
The club is also pursuing Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva. Mourinho’s preference for players with a winning mentality and reliability influenced the move.
Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot noted: “For Jose Mourinho, that’s the type of player he wants. Jose wants a player he can count on.”
Jorrel Hato, signed from Ajax for £37million last summer, emerged as one of Chelsea’s few positives under Rosenior and McFarlane. His development could reduce pressure on the club to sign another left-back immediately.
Chelsea’s focus on center-backs, central midfielders, and versatile attackers suggests a broader recruitment strategy. The club’s defensive depth remains a key concern as they adapt to life without European football.
