Chennai Super Kings signed Akash Madhwal as Ayush Mhatre's replacement after Mhatre suffered a hamstring injury.
Chennai Super Kings have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for the injured Ayush Mhatre ahead of the 2026 IPL season. Mhatre suffered a hamstring injury during CSK’s April 18 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, forcing him out for six to twelve weeks. His absence left a gap in the squad, prompting the franchise to bring in Madhwal as the temporary solution.
Madhwal made an immediate impact in his debut season with Mumbai Indians in 2023, taking 14 wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 8.58. His strong performances earned him a permanent spot in the MI squad, marking a promising start to his IPL career.
However, his form faded in the seasons that followed, raising questions about his long-term consistency. Despite being retained after his debut, Madhwal struggled to replicate his early success.
In IPL 2024, he managed just five wickets in five matches, and his struggles continued in 2025 when he was released by Mumbai Indians. Rajasthan Royals later picked him up for INR 1.20 crore but released him after he took only four wickets in four games.
After being unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, Madhwal remained with Mumbai Indians as a net bowler, training while awaiting another opportunity. His signing by CSK now gives him a fresh platform to revive his career under a new franchise.
CSK’s move suggests they see potential in Madhwal despite his recent struggles. His ability to deliver early in his career could be the reason for the gamble, and his performance in 2026 will be closely watched as he looks to bounce back.
