Coventry chairman Doug King dismisses Frank Lampard’s rumored Chelsea move, praising his promotion-winning season.
Frank Lampard led Coventry to the Premier League with a dominant Championship title, sealing promotion with a 5-1 victory over Portsmouth on Tuesday night. The Sky Blues had already mathematically guaranteed their top-flight return four days earlier with a draw at Blackburn. Lampard’s achievement is even more notable as Coventry won the league without receiving parachute payments. The club marked the occasion with a strong second-half performance against Portsmouth.
Coventry chairman Doug King reassured supporters that they should not concern themselves with rumors about Frank Lampard’s future. King emphasized that Lampard’s success in securing promotion has inevitably drawn attention from other clubs. Speaking to the local broadcaster, King said, 'He’s done a fantastic job, it’s been an incredible 18 months for us and for him. I am sure he’s in reflective mode. I said to him ‘do not underestimate how difficult what you’ve just achieved is to do.’'
King described Lampard as being in 'a happy place' at Coventry, highlighting his deep emotional connection to the city. The chairman noted how meaningful promotion and the title were for Lampard, adding that everyone at the club is content at present. King acknowledged that high-quality managers often attract bids but stressed that Lampard’s happiness remains the priority. He stated, 'It doesn’t mean there’s not going to be some staggering bid for him in the summer and he’ll have to make his choices, because he’s shown his credentials as a high quality head coach, but I’m not going to comment on that, I can’t control it.'
Coventry have been actively planning for their Premier League return since October, according to King. The chairman warned against simply spending heavily, calling it 'a mistake' and emphasizing the importance of value over cost. He explained that the club has been analyzing potential strategies quietly to gain an advantage. King stated, 'We will do what we’ve got to do, but don’t associate staying in the league and being very successful just with how much money you throw out of the door, I think that would be a mistake.'
King described his role as more of a 'party planner' than a chairman, with celebrations planned for the fans. He hopes Sunday’s home match against Wrexham will be a 'massive celebration' while also preparing to face tough opposition. King stressed that taking the foot off the gas would be disrespectful to the league, adding that Wrexham must earn their points. He said, 'They are right in the mix and they have to earn it against us. I know the guys will be set up for that game and the game against Watford the following Saturday.'
Coventry secured promotion with a draw at Blackburn, a result King called 'hugely special' after Bobby Thomas scored a late equalizer. The club celebrated with a 5-1 win over Portsmouth to close out the season in emphatic fashion. King remarked, 'To crown it off in that style (against Portsmouth) was great. We really wanted to win the league and to do it like that was really special.' He also praised the team’s consistent dominance before the final stretch.
King emphasized the club’s partnership with Sky Blues supporters, calling the promotion 'your success as it is mine.' He credited the fans for their role in the club’s achievements alongside Lampard and the players. The chairman noted that the upcoming 'We Are Back: Live' event on May 4 would include a bus parade through the city. King added, 'We couldn’t have done it without you. This is your success as it is mine, the head coach’s and players’ success.'
