Clippers mock Pacers with draft lottery trolling ahead of 2026 selection
The LA Clippers could end a decade-long playoff absence in the 2026 NBA Draft first round via a trade with the Indiana Pacers.
Decade-long gap nears end For more than ten seasons, the Los Angeles Clippers have not held a first-round NBA draft selection, but their streak may conclude before the draft lottery on Sunday. The Indiana Pacers now control a pick that could change that history. Indiana acquired the right to this year's first-rounder in a February trade deadline swap that sent center Ivica Zubac to LA. In return, the Clippers received guard Bennedict Mathurin, forward Isaiah Jackson, two first-round picks, and one second-round pick. One of those first-round selections belongs to the current draft.
Protected selection details The first-round pick sent to the Clippers is safeguarded against landing in positions one through four or ten through thirty, according to the terms of the deal. If the Pacers land in the fifth through ninth spots, the selection automatically transfers to the Clippers. Los Angeles has shown clear awareness of this scenario and has not hesitated to highlight the possibility publicly. Indiana marked one week until the lottery with a social media post that read: "May the odds be in our favor."
Social media exchange heats up The Clippers responded by counting down the days toward the lottery alongside their rivals. On Tuesday, LA replied to an Indiana post on platform X that outlined the Pacers' probabilities for picks one through four, five, and six. The combined chance for the fifth and sixth spots, which would yield the pick for the Clippers, totaled 47.9%, a figure the Clippers directly emphasized. Their post stated: "So you're saying there's a 47.9% chance.." along with a link.
Indiana's lottery prospects The Pacers hold a 14% chance of securing the top overall selection, placing them in a three-way tie with the Washington Wizards and Brooklyn Nets for the best odds. If the pick shifts to the Clippers, it would represent their highest draft position since 2018, when they selected guard Jerome Robinson with the 13th overall pick. Los Angeles used its own first-round choice last year to select center Yanic Konan Niederhauser. The Clippers' original 2026 first-rounder was sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the 2019 trade for forward Paul George.
Pacers chase luck in rebuild Indiana concluded the regular season with a 19-63 record, leaving them in need of a favorable outcome in the draft lottery. The franchise will rely on the randomness of the draw to improve its long-term outlook. A successful lottery outcome could provide the foundation for a rebuild after a challenging campaign.
