Caroline Weir ends four-year Real Madrid stint in 2026

Caroline Weir leaves Real Madrid after four seasons as the club's top scorer and assister.

Caroline Weir has announced her departure from Real Madrid, ending a four-year chapter at the club without revealing her next destination.

She described her time at Madrid as 'a dream come true,' yet admitted her 'only regret is that I could not give you a first title' during her tenure.

Weir leaves the club having made 125 appearances, scoring 63 goals, and setting records for most goals and assists in Real Madrid’s history.

The club acknowledged her decision while praising her 'gratitude and affection for everything she has contributed,' highlighting her professionalism and dedication over four seasons.

Weir joined Real Madrid from Manchester City in 2022 but faced a major hurdle when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in September 2023 while playing for Scotland against Belgium.

Reflecting on her recovery, she shared on Instagram, 'With your support and that of my team-mates, managers, staff, friends and family, I overcame my knee injury, the biggest setback in my career.'

She added, 'You also gave me the freedom to become the player and person I am today. For that, I will always be grateful.'

The announcement of her Real Madrid exit followed her captaining Scotland to the top of their World Cup qualifying group, where she scored seven goals in the final two matches against Israel.

Weir has scored 31 goals in 121 appearances for Scotland, winning trophies at both Manchester City and Arsenal, though titles remained out of reach at Madrid due to Barcelona’s dominance.

Despite this, she was twice named club player of the season and was a Ballon d'Or Feminin nominee last year.

Weir expressed gratitude for her time at Real Madrid, stating, 'The time has come for me to leave this special club.'

She added, 'I do so with a heart full of love, memories and gratitude,' while reflecting on her unfulfilled ambition at the club.

Weir was honored with a guard of honour by her teammates during her final match for Real Madrid.

During her Madrid career, she became the club’s all-time leading scorer and assister.

Her departure marks the end of a four-year chapter that included personal milestones despite the lack of team success.
