Australia ODI squad named without Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood for Pakistan series 2026

Australia omits ODI captain Pat Cummins and key bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc from Pakistan and Bangladesh ODI series in 2026.

Australia will field ODI squads without captain Pat Cummins and pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood for both Pakistan and Bangladesh series. Mitchell Starc, now retired from T20I cricket, also skips the two ODI series as selectors prioritize IPL commitments during the overlapping Pakistan leg. The trio will focus on preparing for the upcoming 15-month Test schedule instead of playing in the ODIs. Mitchell Marsh steps in as ODI captain in Cummins' absence, taking the leadership mantle for Australia's white-ball sides.

Glenn Maxwell remains excluded from the T20I portion of the Bangladesh tour despite being available, continuing his ODI retirement. Aaron Hardie returns to the T20 squad for Bangladesh after standout performances in the PSL, but he is omitted from both ODI selections. Ben Dwarshuis misses the three-match T20I series starting June 17 but will be part of the ODI squad for Bangladesh. Spencer Johnson earns a recall to the T20 squad in Dwarshuis' place for the Bangladesh leg.

Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett stay with their IPL clubs for playoffs as the Pakistan series runs from May 31 to June 4. All four will return for the Bangladesh ODI series beginning June 9, while Dwarshuis alone is excused from the Bangladesh T20I team. Travis Head and Cooper Connolly will rejoin the ODI squad, but Head will not feature in the T20 leg against Bangladesh.

South Australia allrounder Liam Scott and Sydney Sixers spinner Joel Davies receive their first international call-ups. Scott joins both ODI squads while Davies is picked for Pakistan ODIs and Bangladesh T20s. Joel Davies and Tasmania fast bowler Riley Meredith remain with the touring party for Bangladesh despite not being named in the ODI squad due to IPL returns. Josh Philippe is selected solely for the Bangladesh T20s as wicketkeeper-batter.

Billy Stanlake returns to an Australian squad after his last ODI and T20I appearance in 2019. Matt Short, dropped from his CA contract recently and left out of the T20 World Cup squad at the last moment, is included only for the Pakistan series. Neither Stanlake nor Short is part of the Bangladesh squads, limiting their involvement to the three ODIs in Pakistan.

Ollie Peake, aged under 20 until September, could become the sixth teenager to play a men's ODI for Australia if he debuts in Pakistan. Peake shone at the Under-19 World Cup earlier in 2026 but has limited domestic experience with only six List A games. He has two half-centuries in List A cricket, including one in December, averaging 36.75 and striking at 112.21. His first-class record shows an average of just 26 across 23 innings with four half-centuries.

Liam Scott is rewarded for consistent performances across all formats, winning Australia's One-Day domestic player of the year in 2024-25. He helped South Australia claim the title and finished second in the BBL Player of the Year award for 2025-26 after a breakthrough season. Scott also claimed the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year accolade as South Australia secured back-to-back titles.

Chair of selectors George Bailey highlights the importance of giving new players exposure to international cricket. He notes the mix of experienced and returning or debutant players will strengthen Australia's approach on subcontinent tours. Bailey stresses continued focus on player development across varied conditions over the next 18 months to two years. Future campaigns and calendar plans remain central to selection strategy as Australia builds depth ahead of key series.
