Andrew Flintoff named Sydney Thunder BBL head coach for 2026 season
Sydney Thunder will appoint Andrew Flintoff as their BBL head coach after Trevor Bayliss's departure.
Thunder confirm new coach appointment The decision to name Andrew Flintoff as Sydney Thunder's new head coach has been finalised, following initial reports from earlier in the week. Thunder had been searching for a replacement after ending their relationship with Trevor Bayliss, who led the side for five seasons but saw the team finish last in two consecutive campaigns. Flintoff's appointment is expected to be officially announced in the coming days, marking a new chapter for the franchise. ## Reasons behind Bayliss exit and Thunder search Trevor Bayliss stepped down after steering Thunder to a BBL final appearance in 2024-25, despite poor results in the two seasons prior. General manager Trent Copeland outlined the club's ambition to secure a world-class T20 coach, ultimately choosing Flintoff for the role. Flintoff's recent coaching stints include leading the England Lions on an Australian tour last summer, as well as brief advisory work with England's white-ball teams under Matthew Mott. ## Flintoff's coaching background and past stints Before taking the Thunder job, Flintoff coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred for two seasons, guiding them to fourth and third-place finishes in 2024 and 2025. His only prior franchise experience, however, came to an end after disputes over contract terms with new owners Sun Group, who rebranded the team as Sunrisers Leeds. Flintoff admitted on the Beard Before Wicket podcast in October 2025 that he had never considered coaching before Northern Superchargers cricket director Marcus North unexpectedly reached out to him. ## Flintoff's BBL ties and upcoming challenges Flintoff brings direct BBL experience as a player, having featured for Brisbane Heat in the 2014-15 season. Though he only played seven matches for Heat, it marked the final chapter of his 20-year professional career. His first major decision as coach will revolve around David Warner's future as captain, following the opener's drink-driving charge in April. Warner is scheduled to appear in court on June 24, where he is anticipated to enter a guilty plea. ## NSW coaching reshuffle continues Flintoff's appointment as Thunder coach concludes a significant overhaul of Cricket New South Wales' men's program leadership. James Hopes was recently named Sydney Sixers BBL coach, while Brad Haddin took over as NSW state coach after Greg Shipperd's departure despite having a year left on his contract. Haddin is set to introduce new assistant coaches for the state squad, with Peter Forrest and Daniel Smith strongly linked due to their recent success in Sydney premier cricket.
