Andrew Flintoff will leave his England Lions coaching role early to become Sydney Thunder's new head coach in the Big Bash League for the next two seasons.
Andrew Flintoff, a distinguished former England all-rounder, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sydney Thunder men's team in Australia's Big Bash League. This marks his debut coaching position in a T20 league overseas. Flintoff, aged 48, has held the role of full-time coach for the England Lions since 2024 and will depart their ongoing tour in South Africa ahead of schedule to take up the Thunder position. The England and Wales Cricket Board has given their approval, viewing the move as an opportunity for his coaching development.
The Sydney Thunder have finalized Flintoff's appointment for the next two Big Bash League seasons, effective immediately. He succeeds former England coach Trevor Bayliss in the role. Flintoff expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I can't wait to get over there and get started. I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, you look at the players, you look at the support, and I think there's something really big to build on."
The Sydney Thunder, captained by former Australia opener David Warner, finished as runners-up in last year's Big Bash League. Flintoff previously coached the Northern Superchargers men's team in The Hundred for two seasons, guiding the Leeds-based side to fourth and third-place finishes in his tenure. However, he was not retained for the 2026 season after the franchise transitioned to new owners, the Sunrisers group.
Trent Copeland, the general manager of the Sydney Thunder, described Flintoff's hiring as a monumental moment for both the club and the Big Bash League. He highlighted Flintoff's unique qualities, saying, "Fred brings something truly unique to Sydney Thunder. He's a global icon of the game, but more importantly he is a modern leader who understands how to build high-performance environments, connect with players as people, and set standards that last. His passion for the game, coaching itself and knowledge of Australian cricket and our Thunder program stood out during the process."
The official Big Bash League schedule for the upcoming seasons has not yet been released. The England Lions are scheduled to remain in South Africa until a four-day match commencing on 18 December. Flintoff's move aligns with this timing, as he will join the Thunder following his early departure from the England Lions tour.
