Julian Alvarez faces a World Cup with Argentina amid a frenzied three-way La Liga transfer race for the Atletico Madrid striker.
Julian Alvarez prepares to compete in the World Cup with Argentina while navigating one of the most explosive transfer sagas in European football. The 26-year-old striker remains the focal point of a high-stakes three-way battle in La Liga, with Atletico Madrid desperate to retain his services against determined pursuits from Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Real president Florentino Perez fulfilled an election pledge by submitting a €150 million bid for an unnamed star player, later revealed to be Alvarez, though the proposal was swiftly dismissed by rival clubs across Madrid.
Alvarez enjoyed a two-year spell at Manchester City, collecting six major trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium. However, his stint ended with frustration as he was frequently deployed in a secondary role behind Erling Haaland, leading the Argentine to seek a move where he could secure more playing time.
Pep Guardiola, the former City manager, publicly endorsed players who wished to leave if their financial demands were satisfied. In August 2024, Atletico Madrid finalized an €81.5 million agreement with City for Alvarez’s services, netting the Premier League side a substantial profit on a player they had originally acquired for just £14.1 million.
Speaking in a podcast last year, Alvarez reflected on his departure from City with clarity. 'There was never any kind of problem,' he stated. 'I simply told him [Guardiola] how I felt - that I wanted more minutes in some matches where I knew I wouldn’t get them or simply wasn’t getting them. Of course he understood. Players always want more minutes, they want to grow, they want to play the big moments. And if I felt I wasn’t going to have them there, he gave me the freedom to choose my path.'
Since joining Atletico Madrid, Alvarez has delivered 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances, becoming a key figure under manager Diego Simeone. The striker’s contributions have drawn praise from French legend Thierry Henry, who described him as one of his favorite number nines on a recent podcast.
'One of my favourite number nines out there is Julian Alvarez,' Henry remarked. 'Putting pressure, playing alone, he can hold it up, he has played at the Olympic Games, Copa America and I didn’t hear him saying he is tired. The way he plays, I just like him.'
Diego Simeone has repeatedly emphasized Alvarez’s importance to Atletico, calling him the club’s most valuable player. In September, the Atletico boss stated, 'Julian Alvarez is the best player we have, we need to take care of him and keep him for many years at Atletico. We have to help him be even better than he is.'
Alvarez has been entrusted with leading the attack in critical fixtures, including scoring in the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, which ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat, and finding the net in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal.
Real Madrid’s €150 million offer for Alvarez was flatly rejected by Atletico Madrid, who cited the player’s €500 million release clause as the deciding factor. The rejection was accompanied by a statement from Real Madrid explaining the proposal was made 'within the framework of the good relations between both clubs,' while Atletico mocked the bid on social media.
'You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything,' Atletico posted on X alongside laughing emojis. 'We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona does.'
Barcelona have been linked with Alvarez for some time, and reports suggest their pursuit has intensified in the wake of Real’s failed attempt to secure the striker. Earlier this month, Atletico accused Barcelona of launching a 'smear campaign' in the player’s direction, while pundit Guillem Balague indicated talks regarding a potential move were underway.
