Ahmedabad chosen to host IPL 2026 final over Bengaluru

The IPL 2026 final will be played in Ahmedabad instead of Bengaluru despite Royal Challengers Bengaluru's strong home record this season.

Ahmedabad has been selected as the host for the IPL 2026 final, scheduled for May 31. The playoff venues will be spread across three cities, with Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium hosting Qualifier 1 on May 26, followed by the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh for the Eliminator on May 27 and Qualifier 2 on May 29.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this arrangement as a special case due to operational and logistical challenges, deviating from the usual format.

Last year’s playoffs were held in just two venues—New Chandgarh hosted Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Ahmedabad staged Qualifier 2 and the final. This expansion to three venues marks a shift in the league’s approach, likely aimed at easing travel and venue availability constraints.

The decision reflects the growing scale of the IPL, which continues to evolve in its scheduling and logistics.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions, face the prospect of playing the final away from home, despite their strong record at the Chinnaswamy Stadium this season. They have won four of their five matches there, with their only loss coming against Delhi Capitals.

Currently, they sit second on the points table with 12 points from nine games, having upcoming fixtures in Raipur where they remain in contention for playoff qualification.

Punjab Kings lead the points table with 13 points from nine matches, narrowly ahead of Bengaluru. Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans each have 12 points, tied with Bengaluru. Chennai Super Kings, despite a recent win over Delhi Capitals, sit sixth, two points behind the top four teams.

The race for playoff spots remains tight, with just a few matches left in the league stage. The upcoming playoffs promise high stakes, with multiple teams in close contention.

The expanded venue strategy could add a new layer of unpredictability, ensuring that fans across different regions get to experience the action.

As the league progresses, the focus will shift to which teams secure their spots and how the home advantage—or lack thereof—impacts their performances.
